ELIOT, George. Felix Holt. The Radical. London and Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1866.

3 volumes, 8o. Half-titles, 4-page publisher's advertisements at the end of volume 3. Original brownish-orange blindstamped cloth, gilt-lettered on spine, some leaves unopened (some minor soiling and light wear, hinges starting); maroon quarter morocco slipcases.

FIRST EDITION, Carter's variant "B" binding. After reading her manuscript for Felix Holt, Blackwood enthusiastically observed that Eliot's "...politics are excellent and will attract all parties" and agreed to pay her £5,000 for the novel. After publication, critics dismissed the novel for numerous reasons, including the fact that they found it to be too political, and sales were disappointing. When Felix Holt was included in the Cabinet Edition twelve years later, only 7,300 copies had been sold. Parrish, p.20-21; Sadleir 814; Sterling 347; Wolff 2058. (3)
