    3 volumes, 8o. Half-titles and 7 divisional-titles, 16 page publisher's catalogue inserted at end of volume 3. Original cinnamon cloth, covers panelled in blind, spines gilt-lettered (minor rubbing to spine ends); cloth slipcase and chemise.

    FIRST EDITION, Carter's variant binding "A", without the inserted advertisement in vol. I (demonstrated by Carter to be a later insertion), but with the final blank leaf Z6. Eliot's third novel, The Mill on the Floss focuses on the restraints of provincial life and highlights the struggle of the young heroine, Maggie Tulliver, as she decides between moral responsibility and her own self-fulfillment.
