    EMMA, Queen Consort of HAWAII (1836-1885). Autograph letter signed ('Emma') to Elizabeth Wordsworth, Ickworth, 20 September 1865, thanking her for her lines on her late husband 'I shall cherish them as long as I have any appreciation of what is simple and touching in the art which is so eminently connected with your name', 2½ pages, 12mo, on mourning paper bearing crowned monogram, envelope; with a letter by Elizabeth Wordsworth, 26 July 1865, recounting Queen Emma's visit to London, 'the Bishop of London and Mrs Tait and Lady Franklin all escorting Queen Emma (as the Dean observed - probably the only one of that name since Edward the Confessor's mother) who was also attended by her chaplain & various ladies... papa showed her... the red prayerbook', 4 pages, 8vo.

    Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV had petitioned the Church of England in 1860 to help them establish the Church of Hawaii. The Queen later went to England to ask Queen Victoria for funds for the Cathedral Church of St Andrew. Elizabeth Wordsworth was the principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford (see also lots 340 and 391). (2)
