    FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this vivid first hand account of the first trading establishments created in the Oregon Territory by John Jacob Astor. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "Presented to J.H. Thompson Esq by his friend The Author, New York 6th May 1854" (possibly in the hand of a secretary). Included in this copy also is a rare photographic portrait of Franchère mounted on the title.
