    GALILEI, Vincenzio (c.1520-1591). Dialogo della musica antica e moderna... in sua difesa contro Ioseffo Zerlino. Florence: Filippo Giunti, 1602. 2° (306 x 202mm). Woodcut printer's device to title and final recto, woodcuts (3 full-page) in the text, including 5 illustrations of ancient lyres (2 with music notation), tables and diagrams, folding diagram tipped onto p.120, type-set musical examples, 2 engraved musical tables on pp.71 and 78, some contemporary manuscript corrections to the musical examples. (Small marginal tear to H6 without loss, title lightly browned, occasional light browning and spotting throughout.) 18th-century half calf. Provenance: Guenebaud (early ownership inscription on title) -- early annotations to musical staves -- Earls of Macclesfield (bookplate and blindstamps, sale Sotheby's, 14 April 2005, lot 1481).

    Second edition of this illustrated treatise on music by Galileo's father Vincenzio. His musical work 'foreshadowed the subordination of mathematics to experience and the discovery of unexpected laws through close observation that was to distinguish science in the seventeenth century from its predecessors' (DSB V 249).
