    3 volumes, 2° (380 x 276mm). 96 etchings hors-texte, 11 etched vignettes, 11 etched plates of tables for the hors-texte plates, vol. III contains an extra suite of the 96 etchings on Japon Nacré. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY CHAGALL TO WARNOD inserted in vol. I, inviting him to stop by one afternoon to see his painting and more than 50 prints commissioned by Vollard for Les âmes mortes, one page on blue paper. Uncut. Original printed wrappers bound in elaborate bindings of calf, cut-away and with marquetry on-lays with moveable piece, by Monique Mathieu, calf liners, black suede endleaves, calf-backed and -edged chemises with mounted lettering, slipcases.

    ONE OF 50 COPIES WITH AN EXTRA SUITE, of an edition of 368, signed by Chagall. The present copy is bound by Monique Mathieu, the foremost French binder of her generation, and is accompanied by an autograph letter by Chagall pertaining to the work. Commissioned by Vollard in 1923, Chagall produced the 96 etchings over the following 4 years. They were printed by Louis Fort but remained unpublished on Vollard's death. Teriade completed the edition in 1948, adding the 11 vignettes and text. André Warnod (1885-1960) was a noted art critic and writer, who championed foreign-born artists - including Chagall - as shaping the art scene in Paris and beyond.
