    8° (230 x 150mm). (Mostly marginal dampstains reaching into the text of some gatherings, some light spotting and light soiling.) Contemporary Russian green half roan (spine foot chipped, spine-head compartment and front board nearly detached, extremities rubbed, corners worn).

    FIRST EDITION OF GOGOL'S BEST KNOWN WORK. 'One of the great novels of nineteenth-century Russia' (Fekula). This first part of Gogol's famous satire was printed in an edition of 2400 copies with money borrowed from Pogodin.
