GRÉHANT, Nestor (1838-1910). Recherches physiques sur la respiration de l'homme. Paris: Germer-Baillière, 1864. 8° (224 x 155mm). Lithographed plate (head margins of early leaves crumpled, some spotting). Original sage green printed wrappers (soiled, damaged and repaired at head), bound in modern boards. Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR at head of first page to Dr Gerbe. FIRST EDITION. Gréhant used Humphrey Davy's technique (used to measure the residual volume of his own lungs in 1800) of inhaling a hydrogen mixture contained in a mercurial air holder in order to determine the functional residual capacity, and the volume of the dead space, in 1864. Both used a forced breathing method, that was substituted by a prolonged dilution method by D.D. Van Slyke and C.A.L. Binger in 1923. Gedeon pp.49-50.
