HANCOCK GIVERS A SOLDIER HIS BACK PAY IN THE FINAL YEAR OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, with money taken from the confiscated estates of Tories. Lt. John Meacham, of the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment, "ordered to march with the new levies," is awarded the sum of "sixty-seven pounds, ten shillings...towards what is due to him on Acct. of wages for the year 1780..." In an interesting addenda, written in a different hand, Hancock's order specifies that Meacham's money is "to be paid out of the money arising from confiscated Estates." A fine, war-date example of Hancock's famous signature.
