A FINE HANCOCK SIGNATURE from late in his life, during his second-term as governor. He approves payment of £5 to Jeremiah Bulfinch as reimbursement for costs incurred "for sending an express to the Counties of York, Cumberland, Lincoln, Hancock & Washington in December & January last, with Precepts." Hancock's first term as governor ran from 1780 to 1785. His keen political instincts caused him to stand aside that year and let his successor James Bowdoin face the growing unrest in the state that culminated in Shays's rebellion in 1786. The following year Hancock returned to the statehouse and held his post until death in 1793.
