HENDERSON, James (1783?-1848). A History of The Brazil; comprising its Geography, Commerce, Colonization, Aboriginal inhabitants &c. London: Longman, Hurts, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1821.

4o (289 x 230 mm). List of subscribers. Engraved folding map colored in outline, one other map and 28 lithographed plates, including frontispiece, by C. Shoesmith after James Henderson, printed by Hullmandel. (Some light browning or spotting.) Original boards, uncut (rebacked with calf). Provenance: John Wilkin (presentation inscription from the author).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATATION COPY inscribed by Henderson on title: "To John Wilkin Esq. with the author's complements." The rare early issue with plate 23, which was not included in the later ordinary edition for non-subscribers. Henderson embarked for Rio de Janeiro hoping to obtain a position with the British Government. The work offers some of the earliest examples of illustrations produced through the process of lithography. The views are made after Henderson's own drawings on the spot and they represent an important visual documentation of Brazilian history. Borba de Moraes, pp 334-35; Abbey, Travel, 706.
