HOSEA KNEELING BEFORE GOD, historiated initial V on a leaf from a Breviary, in Latin and French, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, third quarter 14th century]
225 x 160mm. Two columns of 28 lines, six two-line initials with ivy-leaf infills on a burnished gold ground, each side with two bar-borders extending the height of the page with ivy leaf and dragon terminals. The initial is on the verso, opening the first lesson to the fourth Sunday, 'Verbum domini...' (cropped at left edge, slight surface soiling at edges).

A highly decorative example of 14th-century Parisian illumination. The delicately painted initial shows the influence of the style identified with Jean Le Noir (fl. 1331-1375) and continues the artistic traditions initiated by his predecessor as the leading illuminator in Paris, Jean Pucelle.
