    IMPERIAL COLLECTION -- Sviashchennyia knigi Vetkhavo Zaveta v Russkom perevod. [The Sacred Books of the Old Testament in Russian Translation.] St. Petersburg: Synod Press, 1868-1875. 4 vols, 8° (222 x 148mm). Contemporary black morocco, sides stamped in blind, upper sides lettered in gilt, edges gilt, moiré silk endpapers (neatly rebacked to style, some wear to the endpapers). Provenance: Grand Duke Vladimir Aleksandrovich (bookplates) -- a 20th-century reader (inscription on one rear endpaper) -- 'printed in Russia' (import stamp).

    GRAND DUKE VLADIMIR ALEKSANDROVICH'S COPY OF THE FIRST AUTHORISED TRANSLATION OF THE OLD TESTAMENT INTO RUSSIAN. Prior to this edition only the Old Testament Psalms had been translated from Church Slavonic. Grand Duke Vladimir was Tsar Alexander II's second son, and brother of Tsar Alexander III.
