    JAMES II (1633-1701), King of England, Scotland and Ireland. Letter signed with autograph subscription ('Cels[itudi]nis V[est]rae Bonus frater et Consanguineus Jacobus R') to Prince Philip William, the Elector Palatine, Whitehall, 11 June 1688, in Latin, one page, folio, integral address leaf (trimmed at outer edge), papered seal (cracked, seal tear, splits in vertical central fold professionally repaired, 4 tiny splits in address leaf, slightly browned). Provenancey: Sotheby's New York sale, 15 December 1986, lot 54; the Spiro Family Collection.

    The King announces the birth of his son (James, 'the Old Pretender'): 'Charissima Coniunx Nostra Serenissima Regina Maria, hesterno die circa horam decimam matutinam filium perpererit, sanum et vita plenum. Ipsa quoque divina benignitate, salva atque Incolumis'. The future 'Old Pretender', James II's only surviving child by Mary of Modena, was born according to royal custom, in the presence of the Lord Chancellor and members of the Council, just six months before the King fled to exile in France.
