FIRST EDITION. "The largest, most exhaustive, and most learned medical dictionary written in English prior to the early 19th century" (Garrison-Morton-Norman). The dedication and some of the articles were written by Samuel Johnson, and it was following this that a group of booksellers suggested he write his famous dictionary. The work also prompted the Diderot & d'Alembert Encyclopdie, after Denis Diderot worked on the French translation of James's work, published in Paris 1746-1748. Garrison-Morton 6799. (3)
