A FAMOUS ACTOR AND THE LAND GRANT TO ONE OF HIS REVOLUTIONARY WAR ANCESTORS. Jefferson and Madison make this land grant of 2,000 acres to Baily Washington, the assignee of William Washington, a Lt. Col. of seven years service in the Continental Army. Lee Marvin was a Washington descendant through his mother, Courtney Washington Davidge. He was himself a distinguished veteran of the United States Army, receiving a Purple Heart for combat wounds sustained in the Pacific Theatre. He later joked that he learned the craft of acting from his experience in the Battle of Saipan, pretending not to be afraid.
