JOACHIM, Abbott of Fiore (1132-1202). Expositio in librum beati Cirilli de magnis tribulationibus& statu sancta matris ecclesie. Venice: Bernardinum Benalium, [ca 1520].

4o (209 x 155 mm). Woodcuts in text. (Lacking first blank, some scattered pale spotting.) 18th-century Italian decorated boards, (repairs to spine, some wear at corners).

A rare early illustrated edition of Joachim's writings. "Dante voiced the general opinion of his age in declaring Joachim one 'endowed with prophetic spirit.' But he himself always disclaimed the title of prophet. The interpretation of Scriptural prophecy, with reference to the history and the future of the Church, is the main theme of his three chief works: 'Liber Concordiae Novi ac Veteris Testamenti,' 'Expositio in Apocalipsim,' and 'Psalterium Decem Cordarum.' The mystical basis of his teaching is the doctrine of the 'Eternal Gospel,' founded on a strained interpretation of the text in the Apocalypse (xiv, 6)" (Catholic Encyclopedia). Adams J-208; Essling 1896.
