FIRST EDITION WITH MAGNIFICENT HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES, text in Dutch, number 96 of 99 copies, signed by the notary public in Dordrecht, guaranteeing that no copies were printed in excess of those ordered by subscribers. As Landwehr writes 'the Dutch edition of this work, one of the few books published with numbered copies, contains really magnificent plates'. The plates in the present example are no exception; they include corals (15), shells (7), butterflies and moths (6), sea-urchins (4), minerals (6), crustacea and arachnids (7), starfish (4), fish (9), birds (7), mammals (14) and reptiles (12). The specimens are selected from several noted natural history cabinets, including those of C.J. Trew, P.S. Müller and D. Stedeling. The birds and mammals include a number of South African species: ostrich, zebra and springbok. Landwehr 97; Nissen ZBI 2229. (2)
