LAFAYETTE, Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de (1757-1834). Autograph letter in English signed, to Colonel Marinus Willet, La Grange, 25 October 1828. One page, 4to, with integral blank, red wax seal, matburn and reinforcements along folds on verso.

Written upon the Marquis's return from a triumphant trip to the United States, Lafayette expresses thanks for a letter of introduction and Colonel's hospitality in New York. Willet served in the militia during the French and Indian War, and was an outstanding Son of Liberty in the years leading up to the Revolution and as a soldier in the Revolution. He rose to the rank (1780) of lieutenant-colonel commandant, 5th regiment of New York. After the war he aligned himself with the anti-Federalists, was appointed sheriff and later mayor of New York City (see DAB).
