LAPLACE, Pierre Simon, marquis de (1749-1827). Exposition du système du monde. Paris: imprimerie du cercle-social, [1796], 2 volumes, 8° (200 x 119mm). Half-titles (some browning and foxing). Contemporary half sheep (rubbed). Provenance: Percelat (signature on an endpaper in vol.I).

FIRST EDITION of Laplace's important work in which he expounds his theory of the origin of our solar system, putting forward his idea that the solar system was formed by a huge incandescent nebula of which the sun is merely a relic. The above work is the non-mathematical predecessor of his Mécanique Céleste (Paris, 1799-1825). (2)
