LAYARD, Austen Henry (1817-1894). The Monuments of Nineveh. First and Second Series. London: John Murray, 1849-1853.

Together 2 volumes: 2o (583 x 428 mm) and oblong 2o (378 x 578 mm). Chromolithographed title in first series and 173 plates (9 colored, some folding) (some occasional spotting, a few plates with minor offsetting from old tissue guards). First series unbound in half morocco and cloth portfolio (some minor rubbing, ties renewed); second series bound in original half morocco, gilt-decorated cloth boards, spine gilt-lettered (some rubbing and light wear).

FIRST EDITIONS. A British diplomat, archaeologist, and adventurer, Layard explored and excavated the ruins of ancient Assyria and Babylon from 1845-1851. Among his discoveries were the palaces of Ashurnasirpal II and Sennacherib and the Black Obelisk of Shalmaneser III. After mistakenly claiming Nimrud as the site of Nineveh, Layard was later able to correctly locate the ancient city at Kuyunjik, nearer Mosul. (2)
