Oblong 2o (216 x 270 mm). 20 double-page copperplate engravings by J. HERMANN after J. REIJNIERS. (Without the extremely rare printed title, but with 3 leaves of letterpress text at end.) 17th-century Dutch mottled calf gilt, covers panelled in gilt with central star design in gilt with turquoise and black morocco inlays (minor wear to joints, covers slightly bowed). Provenance: Clarence Saunders (bookplate).

VERY RARE. The finely engraved plates show the sumptuous funeral procession mourning and honoring COUNT ERNST CASIMIR, Stadtholder of Friesland and Gröningen, who was fatally wounded in battle during the siege of Roermond in June 1632. These illustrations show the full cortège, including richly bridled horses, flags, etc., and the names engraved above the more prominent nobles and dignitaries of the procession. The first plate depicts in a frame a beautiful portrait of the Count, his death in battle as well as his sepulchral monument in the Church at Leeuwarden. The text at end contains a description of the funeral, the names of the participants in the procession, a laudatory poem and an "Introduction to the Art-Loving spectator." Landwehr Splendid Ceremonies 86 (without title-page or 3 leaves of text); Muller 1687 (without title-page and 3 leaves of text); Van Stolk II, 1746.
