2 volumes, 8° (201 x 122 mm). Half-titles, errata in both volumes, printed on blue paper. 2 folding maps, one folding plate. (First map laid down repairing long irregular tear across image and tipped to errata partially obscuring a few letters, plate with 1-in. tear at gutter just crossing image, second map with short tear at gutter, a few stains.) Contemporary calf (rebacked in sheep, some wear).

FIRST EDITION. De Lesseps, a member of La Perouse’s expedition sent out by Louis XVI to explore the northeastern coast of Siberia, was charged with the task of carrying information from the expedition back to France. He was left at Petropavlovsk, and though his journey across the empire was very difficult, he successfully delivered the dispatches, and is credited with the survival of many of the ill-fated expedition’s documents. Cox I p.353; Hill 1010; Howes L270.
