LLOYD GEORGE, David, 1st Earl of Dwyfor (1863-1945). Letter signed to Charles Masterman, Treasury Chambers, Whitehall, 10 September 1913, 4 pages, 8vo (slightly dust-stained). Provenance: Sotheby's sale, 17 December 1981, lot 75; the Spiro Family Collection.

CHURCHILL'S REVERENCE FOR THE ARISTOCRACY: 'I have an appointment with Winston to go through the Naval Estimates ... he hates inflicting any hurt upon the aristocracy. The farmer he has no compassion for, but he bleeds when you talk irreverently about rents and game ... The drama of the situation appeals so much to him that for the moment he was prepared for human sacrifice'.

Lloyd George and Churchill had been on friendly terms even before they sat together in the House of Commons: they enjoyed 'an entente of affinity and to some extent of interest' (Roy Jenkins. Churchill (2001) p.232).
