MALLET, Allain Manesson (1630-1706). Les Travaux de Mars; ou l' Art de la Guerre. Paris: Denys Thierry, 1685-84.

3 volumes, 8o (213 x 137 mm). Additional engraved title-pages, 2 frontispiece portraits, and 308 plates, headpieces and some initials. (Some plates misnumbered in volume 2, some with marginal tears not affecting [or just touching] the image, some repaired, volume one, plate CXXXV with small ink burn, gutters of preliminaries renewed, gatherings B and C in volume 2 misbound). Modern crimson morocco. Provenance: unidentified early descreet blind library-stamp depicting a dragon astride a crown on each title-page.

Mannesson-Mallet was mathematician to the court of Louis XIV, an engineer, map-maker and an expert on fortifications. The latter talent is exemplified in this book: the first volume shows how to fortify different and particular landscapes; the second outlines the method of construction; the third considers the functions of the army in attacking and defending these bastions, and includes a section on Turkish fortifications. Brunet 3, col.1343; Graesse IV; Shirley Mapping the World, p. 518.
