    MANSFELD-VORDERORT, Peter Ernst I von (1517-1604, captain of Charles V, bibliophile). Autograph letter signed ('Mansfeld') to his son, Count Charles of Mansfeld, Luxembourg, 19 April 1586, informing him of his departure for Brussels the next day, 'ou ie suis mande pour asister pour donner les coliers aux chevalliers que sont denomes' [presumably the Knights of the Golden Fleece], and letting him know his likely movements thereafter and how his letters may reach him, one page, folio, integral address leaf. Provenance: Piasa sale, Paris, 15 May 2001, lot 277; the Albin Schram Collection.

    Ten knights were inducted to the Golden Fleece in 1586. Mansfeld himself had been granted the order in 1545, the year in which he was appointed governor of Luxembourg; he was also briefly governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1592-94. Mansfeld assembled an imposing art collection at his palace of Mansfeld near Luxembourg, leaving both palace and collection to Philip III at his death.
