    MARLBOROUGH, John Churchill, 1st Duke of (1650-1722). Two autograph letters signed ('Marlborough') to [Thomas, 1st Earl Coningsby], n.p. and Brussels, 20 January and 4 February 1709, 'I am so touched with the proceedings of the Queen, that my being near Her Person, wou'd be of very litle use, in the temper we are both in at this time', thanking him in the second for 'your kind Congratulations on the successes of the Campagne', hoping that this will procure peace abroad and 'prevent the daingerous Consequences of division at home', 2 pages, 4to, on bifolia, one detached address leaf.

    Contrary to Marlborough's hopes, peace talks were to break down in April 1709, and the conflict against the French was only ended after the hard-fought victory at Malplaquet in September the same year. (2)
