Provenance: Reginald Golding-Bright (1874-1941), drama critic and literary agent (presentation inscription from the author).

    FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Maugham to his literary agent on the front free endpaper: "R.G.B. from W.M. April 1919." [Laid-in:] Autograph letter signed from Maugham to Golding Bright, dated 14 November [ca 1933], in which he mentions his play Sheppey and acknowledges its failure on stage, writing: "I am sorry, but shall not throw myself into the Thames on that account."
