MILLINGEN, James (1774-1845). Peintures Antiques et Inédites de Vases Grecs. Rome: by De Romanis, 1813.

2° (533 x 360mm). Half-title. 63 engraved plates, of which 7 double-page. (Some spotting.) Contemporary russia, sides with a gilt and blind frame, sprinkled edges (light wear on sides).

FIRST EDITION. An important catalogue of vases, many belonging to Millingen himself, while others were the property of the queen of Naples, in the Vatican, and the collections of Durand and others. The vases are interpreted and reproduced with unprecedented care and fidelity; his plates are the first on which missing and restored portions are indicated. Millingen was 'a practical archaeologist, and a collector of taste and acumen. Many of the finest pieces in the British Museum and other European museums were offered to them by Millingen'. ABPC records only two copies selling at auction in over 30 years; the last one, the Kissner copy, in 1990. Blackmer 1133; Brunet III, 1723.
