MODENA 1671 -- GRAZIANI, Girolamo (1604-1675). Il Cromuele tragedia del co Girolamo Gratiani alla Maestà Christianissima di Luigi XIIII Rè di Francia, e di Nauarra. Bologna: Manolessi, 1671.

4o (190 x 138 mm). Half-title. Engraved allegorical frontispiece plate and 2 engraved folding plates. (Title-page cropped affecting imprint, some occasional pale spotting.) Modern paper boards (front joint starting).

Written by the famous Italian poet and diplomat from Modena Girolamo Graziani and printed in Bologna, Il Cromuele dramatizes the tyranny of Oliver Cromwell and the martyrdom of Charles I. Graziani dedicated the play to King Louis XIV of France, likely because King Louis had recently sponsored Graziani's successful efforts to arrange the marriage between Maria Beatrice d'Este of Modena and James Stuart, who would go on to become King James II of England. The finely engraved folding plates illustrate two scenes from the play. Brunet II, 1719.
