Folding engraved general map of America, 47 double-page engraved plates [7 folding, including 15 maps, the remaining 32 mostly comprising town views], 7 portraits and 69 text engravings. (Browning and spotting throughout.) Modern binding of early vellum manuscript waste.
FIRST EDITION of "this is a classic book on America and is much sought after by collectors of Americana as it contains, on p. 124, one of the first views of New York Novum Amsterodamum” (Borba de Moraes). The text engraving on p. 213 shows the crowning of Sir Francis Drake by the California Native Americans.
In contrast to later editions this copy includes early strong impressions of the plates, which illustrate the customs, festivals, occupations, religious rites and battles of the native Indians. This issue includes the portrait of Maurice of Nassau (not mentioned in the index) and one of the first views of New Amsterdam, “without any doubt, the handsomest, and... the most agreeable view of Dutch New York” (Asher's Bibliographical Essay, p.23).
