    MURASAKI SHIKIBU (act. c. 978-1030), author; ANONYMOUS, calligrapher: Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji); 54 chapters mounted in 54 vols; fukurotoji-bon (24.7 x 18.1cm.; 9¾ x 7 1/8in.), sewn (several vols. now separated into two or more sections); Edo period, 18th-19th century; inscribed in black ink on verso and obverse of leaves of buff-colored paper, in dark blue paper wrappers decorated with imagery associated with the given chapter hand-painted in gold and some silver pigment and applied with gold leaf; each front cover applied with buff paper label inscribed with chapter title and hand-painted in gold pigment with bands of mist, grasses and flowers, some chapters with tomo-e (double-comma) crests; inside front and back covers of each vol. applied with gold foil embossed with dense cross-hatch pattern and tomo-e crests; full pages of text 10 columns per page--generally good condition, random leaves waterstained, small and random moisture spots on some covers, several covers slightly abraded

    With lacquer case fitted with five interior drawers to hold the volumes and decorated on the exterior and on the four sides of drawers with imagery from The Tale of Genji in gold and silver togidashi, hiramaki-e, mura-nashiji and hirame on a roiro-nuri ground; the interiors of the doors decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a roiro-nuri ground with tomo-e crests; wood outer storage box (55)
