    14 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS IN PEN-AND-INK AND WATERCOLORS, EACH SIGNED "KYD", 4o (each 150 x 106 mm on larger sheets 280 x 220 mm). Red quarter morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt lettered. Provenance: Kenyon Starling (bookplate).

    ORIGINAL SIGNED PEN-AND-INK AND WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS BY "KYD." The watercolors, which depict characters from Nicholas Nickleby, are titled: "John Browdie," "Mr. Lenville," "Mr. Folair," "Vincent Crummles," "Mr. Snairley," "Ralph Nickleby," "Mr. Squeers," "Smike," "Miss Snevellici," "Mr. Kenwigs," "Mrs Squeers," "Tim Linkinwater," "Arthur Gride," "Sir Mulberry Hawk." Clayton C. Clarke's first Dickens illustrations appeared in 1887 in the Fleet Street Magazine. His illustrations were very popular, and Clarke specialized in watercolor drawings of Dickens characters, which he sold through the London book trade. See Frederic G.
