NORRIS, Frank. Vandover and the Brute. Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1914.

8o. Original linen-backed gray boards, with printed spine label, very fine; WITH THE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET containing the title, author's name and publisher's blurb within orange rules on front panel, spine panel printed, rear panel and flaps plain (minor edgewear, else fine); cloth slipdase. Provenance: Barton W. Currie (bookplate; his sale, Parke-Bernet, 8 May 1963, lot 328 [part]).

ADVANCE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, WITH THE SCARCE EARLY DUST JACKET. Written almost simultaneously in the mid-1890s with McTeague (1899), Vandover and the Brute was published posthumously in 1914. "Shortly after Frank Norris' death certain publishers, learning of the existence of a completed novel from his pen, desired to publish it. The manuscript...had been packed away in a crate, and was in storage in a large warehouse in San Francisco" (Preface). The San Francisco Earthquake occurred prior to locating the manuscript, and the warehouse burned in the fire. Some time later it was discovered that the manuscript had been located among some boxes that had been moved away just prior to the building's destruction. The story shows the significant influence of Emil Zola on the young writer, and the work bears the evidence of a significant phase in Norris's development as a writer. BAL 15046.
