Contemporary calf, flat spine tooled in blind, edges yellow (front cover detached, spine worn). Provenance: a contemporary reader (shelf-mark 'N 56') -- Nikifor Pozniakov (inscriptions) -- Paul M. Fekula.

    DISTILLING AND BREWING IN RUSSIA, with the engraved frontispiece showing vodka-makers. A very good copy of this popular work, first published in 1792. The text follows the greatly enlarged second edition, published in 1796. Osipov, one of the more fascinating figures of the age of Catherine II, also produced a number of translations, including Don Quixote and Clarissa Harlowe, and popular parodies, including of the Aeneid and Bogdanovich's Dushinka.
