Contemporary mottled calf with tooled border, gilt spine with black morocco label (extremities rubbed, joints repaired, upper hinge starting). Provenance: signature on titlepage.
FIRST EDITION of a selection of plays by the playwright whom Viazemskii described as the transformer of Russian tragedy, whose services could be compared with those of Karamzin. Includes the play Dimitrii Donskoi, which touched a nerve with patriotic audiences when first performed only days after the Battle of Eylau.
