In 1660 PHILIP IV (1605-16650, King of Spain, and several members of his court journeyed to France as chaperone to his daughter Maria-Theresa, Infanta of Spain. While the Peace of the Pyrenees had been signed in 1659 by King Philip and Louis XIV, King of France, in order to secure a more concrete and lasting peace between the two nations, Philip agreed to the marriage of his daughter to the King of France. Castillo describes Philip and Maria-Theresa's journey, including several stops in Spain, a stop in Burgos where the Infanta and King Louis were married by proxy, and then the trip to Pheasant Island where Louis and his court met his new bride before continuing on to Saint-Jean-de-Luz where the French marriage occurred. The large folding plate illustrates several of the towns and scenes encountered along the journey. Palau III, 48145; Watanabe 1844.
