    7 volumes, 2° (398 x 246 mm). Half-titles, titles printed in red and black. 228 engraved plates (33 folding), engraved headpieces and vignettes. (Some browning, spotting or staining, a few folding plates trimmed short.) Contemporary sprinkled calf, spines in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands gilt, brown morocco lettering-pieces (some light wear, some light chipping to spines, a few spine repairs preserving original spines).

    FIRST FRENCH EDITION. Based on J. F. Bernard's Les Ceremonies et coutoumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde, published in Amsterdam in 11 volumes between 1723 and 1743, and illustrator Bernard Picart's "most ambitious undertaking" (Ray). The present work contains the additions by Antoine Banier and J.B. Le Mascrier. Included are the religious ceremonies of the Jews (vol.I), the Catholics (vols.I-II), the Greeks (vol.III), the Protestants (vols.III-IV), the Muslims (vol.V), and various Asian, Native American and African religions (vols.
