FIRST PRINTING OF POE'S CHILLING SHORT STORY "THE TELL-TALE HEART." The tale was initially rejected by the Boston Miscellany with the editor's request that "if Mr. Poe would condescend to furnish more quiet articles he would be a most desirable correspondent" (Letters, ed. by Ostrom, 149). Following the rejection, Lowell accepted the story of the first number of The Pioneer. Only three numbers were published of his journal before the venture ceased for financial reasons. "Before its demise, Poe had contributed, at Lowell's invitation, to each number...for these contributions he was never paid" (Heartman & Canny, p. 240). "The Tell-Tale Heart" is widely considered a classic of the Gothic fiction genre and one of Poe's most famous short stories. Heartman & Canny, p. 240.
