    PORTUGAL. A collection of approximately 29 letters and documents in Portuguese on vellum (7 on paper), 1350-1824, including five documents of the 14th Century, nine documents of the 15th Century and five documents of the 16th Century, the pre-1500 documents with notarial marks, four documents stitched into paper wrappers, the majority with summaries or transcriptions of content in modern Portuguese, and including:

    Thirteen documents of title, 1350-1439, letters patent for sales, exchanges and partitions of property in or near Evora (8), Calhariz (3) and elsewhere, the earliest document being letters patent of Vasco Perez for a sale to João Cezar and his wife Costanza Vasquez, Evora, 22 October 1350, notarial mark, 15 lines on one membrane, 165 x 155mm (minor soiling, nicked at upper margin), stitched into paper wrapper;

    The recital of a papal indulgence: document in Portuguese and Latin, a public instrument granted to Bastia Gomez on behalf of royal counsellor Luys de Sylvera at Evora, 24 January 1530, reciting (in Latin) an indulgence granted to Martinho de Silveyra by Pope Callixtus III in 1456, the majority in a handsome formal hand, initial capital with decorative flourishes, large mark of the apostolic notary, one membrane, 575 x 380mm (a few punctures and discolouration, minor mould damage);

    A series of royal grants, comprising: MANUEL I. Document with royal sign manual, a grant of arms to Francisco de Castello Branco, Count of Villa Nova, Lisbon, 24 April 1517, one membrane, 132 x 232mm; with a related document, a partition of the estates of Martinho de Castello Branco, 23 December 1493, on vellum, 12 leaves, folio;
    JOÃO III. Document signed ('el Rey'), a grant of arms to João Rodrigues de Sá, Lisbon, 23 May 1541, one membrane, 210 x 350mm, royal seal on red wax (rubbed and worn); with a related document, an account signed on behalf of João III for sums of money received from Pero d'Oliveira, 1529;
    and documents with secretarial signatures of Pedro II (1706), João V (three documents, 1723 and 1724), José I (1771) and the Infanta Regent Isabel Maria (1824); with five other documents. (29)
