    8° (207 x 123mm). Folding map by Makhaev, woodcut title vignette. (Occasional light spotting and browning, some short marginal tears, small hole and tear in title-page, some repairs, including to the map folds.) Contemporary blue wrappers (front cover lacking, spine chipped, edges frayed).

    WITH A POSTAL MAP OF RUSSIA BY MAKHAEV. Such calendars began to be produced in 1762 and from 1776 were edited by S. Ia. Rumovskii, Professor of Astronomy at the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Includes extracts from decrees on the 'Iamskaia Gon'ba', the postal service begun by Ivan III based on that used by the Mongols during their rule, renamed in 1782 with the founding of the Postal Department. The map shows the postal routes of the Russian Empire up to the Ural Mountains. RARE: one of only 1200 copies; WorldCat records none in North America. SK IV, 302.
