    PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (c.100-c.178). A collection of maps of Europe, Asia and Africa. Strasburg: Johannes Grüninger for J. Koberger, 1525. 39 maps on 38 sheets (370 x 510mm to the page edge), text on verso, folded once as issued, some with light colour washes. (The majority of maps with worming in the margins generally not affecting the image, some with tears at the fold, a very few with faint staining.) Disbound, many with remnants of stubs. Provenance: an early owner (a few pen and ink emendations).

    39 maps from the 1525 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, comprising maps 1-5, 7-17, 19-26, 29-33, 35, 38-40, and 43-48. These include maps of the Arabian Peninsula and the Gulf Coast, Turkey, the Caucasus, India, Sri Lanka, South East Asia, the African continent, the North African coast, the Eastern Caspian, the British Isles, Switzerland, the Mediterranean Isles, and others. It has been suggested that the borders surrounding the explanatory text of these maps was the work of Hans Holbein. Adams P-2221; Nordenskiold Collection 208; Phillips Atlases 362. (38)
