    RAFFLES, Thomas Stamford (1781-1826). The History of Java. London: Black, Parbury and Allen; and John Murray, 1817. 2 vols., 4° (268 x 208mm). Two soft-ground etched frontispieces, hand-coloured folding engraved map, 63 engraved or aquatint plates, of which 9 hand-coloured and 1 folding, 2 folding letterpress tables (Abbey counts one of these as a plate), 7 engraved vignettes. (Lacking half-titles, without the advertisements found in the Abbey copy, occasional light browning.) Contemporary calf ,gilt spines with lettering pieces (extremities lightly rubbed, 1 spine label chipped, upper cover to vol. 1 lightly abraded, joints just starting to crack). Provenance: Edward Herbert, second earl of Powis (1785-1848), Roxburghe Club member and president (armorial bookplate).

    FIRST EDITION, WITH THE HAND-COLOURED PLATES OF JAVANESE LIFE AND COSTUME. One of the most important books on Java to this day, of which only 900 copies were printed. Many of the plates, including the hand-coloured costume plates, are by William Daniell who visited the island in 1785 and 1793. Abbey Travel 554.
