RAMSAY, David (1749-1815). The History of the American Revolution. Philadelphia: Aitken & Son, 1789.

2 vols., 8o. Foxing (more severe at beginning and end). An attractive American (probably Philadelphia) binding in contemporary tree calf, gilt spine, red and green gilt-lettered and gilt-tooled labels, spine in 6 compartments with gilt urns and other emblems, endpapers of decorative blue-and-white wavy elements. (Rubbed, especialy at extremities and joints).

FIRST EDITION of Ramsay's very popular account of the Revolution, drawn, the author informs us, from papers Ramsay studied while serving in the Continental Congress (1782, 1783, 1785 and 1786). His account extends as far as the institution of the Constitution and Washington's inauguration as President. This and Ramsay's History of the Revolution in South Carolina were the first books granted copyright by Congress. Evans 22090; Sabin 67687; Howes R-35.
