Rusconi's woodcuts, 'a new and skilful rendering of many of the Vitruvian woodcuts' (Fowler), were begun as early as 1553 and were intended to illustrate a full translation of Vitruvius. The project remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1587, a brief summary in Italian of Vitruvius's text, appeared in 1590 (two issues) and again in 1660, when 'the blocks in some instances are recut' (Fowler). Cicognara 641; Fowler 281; BL Seventeenth Century Italian II p.806.
