3 parts in one volume, small oblong 2° (200 x 275mm). First title within typographical border. 40 engraved plates mainly of music, most by and after the author, others by Joannes Blavet after Sanz. (Title strengthened at margins, some leaves frayed, marginal waterstains and soil marks, one plate in part 3 cleanly torn, creases in final plate.) Contemporary limp vellum (rubbed and crinkled). Provenance: Joaquin de Arteaga-Lazacano, XVII duque del Infantado (bookplate, detached; occasional early annotations).

ONLY THE SECOND GUITAR BOOK TO BE PUBLISHED IN SPAIN. Following Amat's booklet on the baroque guitar (Valencia, 1596), this work contains ninety-eight solo pieces. The first two parts were published separately in 1674 and together in 1675, but this appears to be the only edition to include the third part. The Instruccion is a complete guitar course explaining tuning, fretting, basso continuo, ornamentation, improvisation, etc., and two of the plates illustrate all the finger positions on the strings. Advanced for its time, it provides an excellent example of the influence of 'rustic music' on the baroque. Palau 301195.
