RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE MONUMENTAL CATALOGUE OF SCHINKEL'S ARCHITECTURAL OEUVRE. 'Schinkel is the most highly-regarded German architect of his generation' (RIBA). Schinkel published this work in 28 parts and foresaw no end to it, the series cut short by his death in 1841. RIBA suggests that as a consequence no general title was ever issued. Complete copies are almost unknown, and the V&A and the RIBA copies are both defective. 'ONE OF THE GREATEST OF ALL ARCHITECTURAL FOLIOS' (Avery's Choice), representing some fifty realized works and unexecuted architectural projects, as well as his designs for furniture, ornaments and handicraft objects. 'As such, the volume is at one and the same time a pattern book and a textbook for exemplary building and design that was to be of considerable influence for future generations of architects' (B. Evers & C. Thoene (eds) Architectural Theory from the Renaissance to the present, 2003), p.596). A. Placzek (ed.) Avery's Choice: Five centuries of great architectural books, 1997, no.320 (describing the 1841-1843 edition); Berlin Kat. 2172; RIBA 2934.
