Nicol, from the types of W. Martin, 1802. 9 volumes, 2° (414 x 300mm). 100 engraved plates after H. Fuseli, W. Hamilton, J. Northcote, J. Opie, J. Reynolds, G. Romney, R. Smirke, T. Stothard, F. Wheatley, R. Westall and others (variable spotting and browning of plates and text, generally light but heavy at times, some offsetting, occasional finger-soiling, small crayon mark to title of vol. V). Contemporary blue straight-grained morocco gilt by Miller, spot-marbled endpapers, gilt edges (variable rubbing, heavy on spines and joints of some vols., some joints cracking, spine of vol. I torn at foot). Provenance: E. J. Gallichan (bookplate).

    According to the prospectus, issued in 1798, a type foundry, an ink factory and a printing house were all specially started for the production of this magnificient edition with plates by leading English artists and prefaces by Pope and Johnson.
