SIBELIUS, Jean (1865-1957). Four typed letters signed ('Jean Sibelius') to Sir Thomas Beecham, Järvenpää, 17 January 1948 - 3 December 1954, in English, together 4 pages, 4to, separately framed and glazed.

GRATITUDE FOR BEECHAM'S INTERPRETATIONS OF HIS WORK. In 1948 Sibelius writes a letter of introduction for his son-in-law, Jussi Jalas, 'a prominent musician of rare ability' who is visiting England 'to hear the best English orchestras and conductors'; Sibelius hopes that Beecham will permit him to attend a rehearsal, and goes on to thank him 'with all my heart for what you have done for my music, especially for the splendid performance of the VI symphony and the profound understanding you have for this work of mine in which so few conductors take real interest'. In July 1949 he writes to congratulate Beecham on an 'excellent' recording of the Seventh Symphony -- 'It has all the qualities that make your performances of my works so living and effective'; unfortunately a thunderstorm prevented him from listening to Beecham's latest concert on the radio. In November 1952 Sibelius renews his thanks for Beecham's promotion of his music, 'not least for the Sibelius concert of the Edinburgh Festival which I consider one of the greatest honours bestowed on me during my long life. I am always happy when you give life to my music through your great Art'. The last letter responds to a request from Sir Thomas for a suggestion as to a work of Sibelius's he should conduct: 'I wish to inform you that the existing recording of my symphonic poem The Oceanides is not satisfactory as the conductor has taken the work too fast. If therefore you could be interested in a new recording of this work it would make me happy'. (4)
