    7 volumes, 12o (170 x 103 mm). 23 engraved plates (5 folding), and 20 (of 25?) engraved maps and plans (11 folding) . Contemporary calf, spines gilt (some wear at joints, a few cracked, a few chips at spines). Provenance: William Forbes Leith (bookplate; signature on title-pages of volumes 1, 2, and 3); Mrs. Colonel Forbes Leith (bookplate).

    FIRST EDITION containing Smollett's anthology of the historical expeditons of Columbus, Cortez, Drake, Raleigh, Magellan, and others. Sabin 20518. Undertaken at the expense of Robert Dodsley, the compilation also includes the histories of the conquests of Mexico and Peru, accounts of voyages to Florida and Greenland, as well as descriptions of Iceland and Ceylon. Most importantly, Smollett's own account of the disastrous attempt by the British to overtake the Spanish stronghold at Cartegena written while a surgeon's second mate aboard the Chicester in 1741 is here published for the first time.
